Sergey Krusher Kovalev cut a fearsome path through the Light Heavyweight division, using his strong hands and mean streak to dominate opponents and becomes the clear king at 175 pounds. (Clear to anyone that is not Adonis Stevenson at least.) Then he met Andre Ward. Ward took a decision win over Kovalev last November in a fight most felt Kovalev should have won, then stopped the Russian in a rematch in June, though again, many felt it was unjustified due to possible low blows in the finish. Since the Ward loss, he has let go of his longtime trainer John David Jackson, claiming at one point that he would not have a lead trainer for this fight. The WBO world title was one of the three Ward won off Kovalev before freeing them up with his surprise September retirement. It will take Kovalev back to the very beginning of his rise, when he took it away from Nathan Cleverly in four ferocious rounds, back in 2013.
